The first of several similar projects, the Universe of Energy Entry Mural is a full-scale tile-for-tile vector recreation of the original artwork completed in 1982.
ABOUT THE ORIGINAL
The Mosaic Mural is a “digitized” depiction of the Sun’s corona as seen through a thermographic camera. At the outermost edge of the Sun’s rays is a tiny white dot symbolizing both the comparative size and position of the Earth in the solar system.
PROCESS
First, the mural was documented utilizing over 30 photographs. Then these images were later segmented in a 6x6 grid (identical to the original mural’s assembly) and then rebuilt into the Illustrator document. Next, the mural was recolored using (non-reflective) color reference photos. Finally, a “grout” outline (and bevel) was created to properly simulate the tile surface.
In the end, over 32,000 individually placed tiles were needed to recreate just one side of the mural. The accompanying Left Side is (thankfully) a reflection (both Axis) of Right Side, which was chosen because of its inclusion of the proportionally-sized “Earth Dot”.
